were posted throughout the archipelago; and hostility to the white man's dominion, under whatever flag, was spread by agitators and implemented by rifles. The fire of rebellion leapt from island to island, springing up little railroads, flickering along jungle trails. As the President had been assured, the untutored inhabitants possessed only a dim conception of nationality and union; but freedom is a more primitive idea. The name of Aguinaldo was the symbol of liberation, and the tribes arose in strength to follow him.

When news of the Treaty of Paris reached Manila in December, the American forces occupied an enclave of treachery, surrounded by violence. In the wilderness of Luzon and on the other islands of the archipelago, the brothers of the insurgents awaited the signal to drive out the invader. While McKinley's thoughts were occupied with plans for the ratification of the treaty and for the future peace and prosperity of the Philippines, events were moving toward a more obstinate and sanguinary contest than the three months' war with Spain.
